Tips on Your Web Design Process

Web Design can be more than just the look and feel of your website. A great website has updated available content, great functionality, and search friendly URL’s (pretty URL’s).

Knowing Your Audience

Always putting your brand first and foremost, making every aspect of your site or downloadable portion of your site, obviously and traceable back to you. Know your key audience and some statistics about them.

  • Other sites frequented
  • Cross browser platform (make sure your website looks good in several browsers)

Continuity is Key

Every page of your site or derivative of your site must be anticipated by your viewing audience. Keep navigation and common links in repetitious locations. Any advertising or marketing should avoid blindness, but not obstruct regular viewing of primary content.

The trap many site owners find themselves walking into is trying to do too much with their site design, too fast. With so many web design software applications available almost anyone can become a web site design specialist – by title only. Web page design however actually takes more than some pretty graphics and a place to put them. At least some understanding of how your pretty pictures will be combined into code and how to make them function properly, is required to make any web designer effective.

Law firms should shorten names for SEO, marketing purposes

Most people have seen a law firm with multiple names on it and shook their head wondering how anyone could remember such a business. With that and search engine optimization (SEO) in mind, some legal marketers are encouraging law offices to shorten their names.

In an article for the Legal Intelligencer, Gina F. Rubel writes that some law firms are shortening their names for online marketing and public relations reasons at the advice of marketers.

Dentists Step Up Marketing as Patients Skip Their Visits

In the slowdown, even dentists are feeling the pinch. David Wong, who runs a private practice with his wife in Tulsa, Okla., has seen his business slip 10% since the beginning of this year. That has him spending more time marketing and less time cleaning or pulling teeth.

Dr. Wong has upped his advertising, taking advantage of low newspaper and broadcast rates, and now sends email reminders to customers on top of traditional mailed postcards. He is even on Twitter, aiming to connect with customers as “not just the guy in a white coat with a drill in his hand.”

“It’s a lot more work,” he admits. “You can’t go to the office and just be a dentist anymore; you have to go to the office and be a dentist and a CEO.”

Business Cards that Work

Your business card is one of the most important marketing tools you’ll ever create. You give your business card to prospects and customers so they have your contact information. You tuck your business card inside of presentation folders, drop it in letters, and use it in a myriad of other ways to let people know who you are and what you do. And, if you run ads in local newspapers, your business card may even double as camera-ready copy for the publication’s “business card ad” pages.

But no matter how you use your business card, it won’t be the marketing workhorse it should be unless it looks professional, is easy to read, and helps customers and prospects remember what you sell and why they should buy it from you.

9 Branding Tips For Small Businesses

  1. Have a professional website. It’s not just good enough to just have a website, you must reflect your brand image. If your known as a top notch photographer, the last thing you want is a website designed 10 years ago. It doesn’t reflect well on you. Everyone, yes everyone, uses the web today to check references. If someone recommends your service, you can almost guarantee that they will go online to look for you. Your website design should be updated at least every two years to stay current.
  2. Blogs are good. Blogs help your business on multiple levels. First off, valuable content on a consistent basis will make you look like an expert. People are looking for experts, not apprentices. The software that powers blogs has multiple advantages. It’s very easy to publish. It’s a database driven environment where style is separate from content so you will not need to go back to your web design agency for every little change. And use of tags and sitemaps make basic search engine optimization easy. But the real reason blogs are great is that they enable conversation. Two-way dialog is much more valuable than a company that just dumps messaging and collateral on their customers.
